Research essays could be one of the important pieces of academic papers that a student may write during his entire university life, depending on the course of study he is taking. Defined, research refers to the process of obtain related data and information from a source or variety of sources. Thus, in writing a research essay, it is fundamental that the student conduct either intensive or extensive gathering of pertinent data and information that would be used to discuss and tackle a certain essay topic.

When writing research essays, it is vital that the student must avoid committing several mistakes that could prove fatal to the paper. These mistakes definitely have a negative impact on the quality of the compositions, thus the student would end up earning lower grades. 

Here are some mistakes that a student should watch out for when writing his research essay.

1. Some students actually do not care taking note of the instructions or directions provided by their teachers and professors. These instructions and directions are very important, for they show the way on how students should proceed with the essay writing assignment. They limit what the students can do and cannot do when writing their essays.

2. There are students who choose research essay topics that are too complicated and complex to tackle. These students think that the more difficult is the topic, the higher is the grade they will get for discussing it in the essay. However, this thinking could only be true if the student could really tackle the topic. Writing about a complicated and complex topic is very risky and may end up in total chaos.

3. One may think that he could forego drafting the essay outline and go ahead with writing the actual essay. Outlines are very useful for any kind of compositions, including research and media essays. An essay outline serves as guide and organizer; it allows student to organize his ideas and write the composition with ease.

4. The most common and fatal mistake that students could commit while writing their research essays is submitting the academic paper without reviewing it first. Reviewing the essay would allow the student to spot the errors in the composition and rectify them accordingly.

5. One critical mistake that even good writers commit is submitting the research essay beyond the deadline. Professors view this negatively and may affect their grading of the paper.
